The Los Angeles Police Department has announced that there will be a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint in West Los Angeles tomorrow night. So if you're heading to the area, make sure you're sober or you have a designated driver. The West Traffic Division of LAPD will be conducting the checkpoint on February 20 at Vermont Avenue between Pico Boulevard and 11th Street. The sobriety checkpoint is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM and last until 2:00 AM.

LAPD officials say that the West Traffic Division is conducting the sobriety checkpoint in order to reduce the number of traffic collisions involving intoxicated and unlicensed drivers. They hoping that the number goes down through law enforcement and public awareness. Checkpoints can often serve as a visible reminder in a community; reminding people not to drink and drive.

Rather than yielding a large number of DUI arrests, LAPD officials say on their website that DUI checkpoints have the main purpose of educating the community about the dangers associated with drinking and driving. LAPD says that the DUI checkpoints and roadblcoks in the community "are a highly effective educational campaign."

It's important to remember that there are certain constraints law enforcement officers have when conducting sobriety and drivers license checkpoints which we covered in an earlier blog post titled "Los Angeles DUI Attorneys Analyze Sobriety Checkpoints". If you feel that law enforcement officers didn't go through the right procedures to conduct a checkpoint, or if you've been wrongfully arrested for a DUI, please don't hesitate to contact a DUI attorney in Los Angeles.
