Deciding to drink and drive typically puts you at risk of jail time, hefty penalties and license suspension if caught. But if your decision leads to the DUI fatality or injury of another, you could face losing your freedom for years. Yannis Ismael Galanis was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday after he pleaded guilty in August to felony vehicular manslaughter and other charges, reports The Orange County Register.
The DUI crash Galanis was responsible for occurred in July as he was speeding down I-5 near Disneyland Drive. When Galanis lost control of the car, he swerved into a lane and crashed into another car and several other objects, killing his passenger and injuring an occupant of the other car.
The 28-year-old reportedly had been convicted of a misdemeanor DUI in 2002 and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent at the time of his 2011 DUI crash.
He was later convicted of felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing injury with a prior conviction, and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08 causing injury, according to The Register.
If you are facing severe charges such as vehicular manslaughter or a DUI causing injury, it is highly recommended to procure the services of an experienced Los Angeles DUI attorney. If you are found to be grossly negligent at the time of the DUI fatality, you will be charged with a felony and, like Yannis Ismael Galanis, face several years in prison.
