Authorities have arrested a drunk driving suspect in the tragic hit-and-run case in Santa Ana that left a toddler dead, reports KTLA News.
Police say 23-year-old Angel Perez is the hit-and-run suspect alleged to have hit a young family as they were crossing a street around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The suspect had hit a mother walking with her 1-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son with his Toyota 4-Runner. The mother, who was carrying her daughter at the time, flew on to the hood and fell to the ground, while the toddler was pulled under the car. The suspect then fled the scene.
The path of destruction he left in his wake described by witnesses was heartbreaking.
"This lady was laying down with her kid in her arms," witness Diana Delgado told KTLA. "The paramedics came and he was full of blood."
Although the mother and daughter's injuries were not life-threatening, the little boy succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Officials later arrested Perez as he was drinking at a nearby bar, and authorities say he admitted to being in the car during the accident. Given the charges he faces - vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, and driving without a license - he is going to need an experienced Los Angeles DUI attorney. Although authorities allege that Perez confessed, he is still innocent until proven guilty.
If convicted of all charges, he could face a multi-year prison sentence. Recently, a Bellflower man received a seven-year sentence for killing his passenger during a drunk driving crash.
